Day 71 - At Sea in the Andaman Sea

Tuesday March 20th, 2012

Today was a blog, blog, blog day. As of this post we have not posted those 5 days yet as we are still editing and choosing pictures. I am really beginning to wonder how I will blog when we get to Europe when we will be in a port every day! Yikes that will be almost impossible, so be warned I may have to catch up on the Atlantic crossing home.

We are now journeying through waters where pirates lurk, and so there are watchers on the ship on post. There are also many freighter ships and many little fishing boats nearer our ship as we sail, than we have seen ever on this trip so far. These little boats are typical of this region - painted bright blue or red with a very prominent and exaggerated bow. I was quite surprised at how far out they are, given their size. We are also traveling at a fair clip. Captain Jonathan said that the night we left Singapore there were hundreds of ships that we had to navigate through all night long in these waters.

We also saw a great big amount of debris in the water late this morning as we were sitting on the Lower Promenade. The currents here sort of gather it all up and it looks as if it came from the same source. It is the first time we have seen garbage in the ocean - pop bottles, paper, styrofoam, lumber, trees, and general flotsam and jetsam. We also saw some dolphins about the same time, which drives home the point that it is their home we are polluting.

This evening we ate at the Pinnacle. our high-end specialty restaurant Originally we had organized the evening so our entire table could eat there, as Art had not been as yet. Then it happened that Art could not make it because he is sick today, so Karen welcomed our invitation as Jonathan needed to get to bed early as he had only had 4 hours sleep navigating after Singapore.

We headed for bed around 10 to get ready for Phuket, Thailand.
