Day 64 - At Sea in the South China Sea

Tuesday, March 13th, 2012

Doesn't it sound romantic to be sailing in the South China Sea? Well after all these many days at sea, water looks the same everywhere in the oceans of the world, except some days in the blue blue Pacific, and you could be anywhere. This trip has driven home just how much water is on our planet Earth and we are travelling much of it at an average speed of 20 knots. I have figured out we can go just over 300 km a day. Every day at 12:45 pm. Captain Jonathan Mercer gives his daily report over the loudspeaker which includes the meteorological information, and the distance we have to travel to our next destination, and the seas in which we sail.

Today there was not much on the daily agenda, except to finalize what we were doing in Vietnam tomorrow and the day after. We had been told that the best deals were here for apparel in the markets.

Linda has been learning to knit and she has ripped out her square many many times, so we gathered for a little stitch and bitch in the Explorers Lounge.

Barry and I had been invited to join Brad and Gloria at their Pinnacle table for the Murder Mystery dinner. We therefore had an earlier dinner than usual. What a great evening this turned out to be. Most of our friends sat at nearby tables, except Lynn and Erika who had gone to the first one. We started out meeting in a room for champagne cocktails. The theme was Amsterdale High School reunion. We named ourselves Leslie Lucky and Barry Doright, Class of 65 ( we decided we had met in high school). The cast of characters came into the cocktails and introduced themselves. Mario Testosteroni, Venus Mantrap, Jacques Strappe, somebody Flashoff, and Harriet and somebody Nerdy. We swept down for dinner, and found that Jacques Strappe would also sit at our table. The evening progressed very noisily - with Harriet's husband being killed in the kitchen within minutes, and it was a combination of characters visiting our table, and Mario Testosterone the cop interviewing the cast of characters. At the end we voted and Jacques Strappe was the killer! We also dined on a wonderful menu, and lots of excellent wines, ending with Death by Chocolate.

Barry and I went to the show and thank goodness for that. One of the best yet - a pianist from Poland - who is a virtuoso performer, played Chopin, Mozart, Rachmaninoff, Sate, and Gershwin. Although we had to be up early we were glad we heard this performance and we also were sad that so few people attended. We went off to our cabin to pack for our day in Nha Trang, Vietnam.
